Next Bible Study - 5/6/07

Our next Bible Study will be next Sunday, May 6. We will continue to look at 1 John, studying specifically 2:12-17.

For the moment, lets split this into two sections, 12-14, and 15-17.

1 John 2:12-14
12 I am writing to you, little children,
because your sins are forgiven for his name's sake.
13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome the evil one.
I write to you, children,
because you know the Father.
14 I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
because you are strong,
and the word of God abides in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.

1 John 2:15-17
15
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

Please take some time to look at these passages before next Sunday. A couple of initial comments/questions:
  1. Do verses 12-14 seem odd at all to you? What do you think John is trying to say in this section, and why does he write it this way?
  2. Verses 2:15-17: What does John define as the love of the world? What is wrong with loving the world? What can we surmise from those (including ourselves) if we see the love of the world?

Verses 12-14 from my talks and study with Paul i understand it as three stages. Writing to the children as new and young christians they know Jesus and God but are not mature yet. To the young men they have overcome the evil one. Accepting God's word and working on living by it. Stronger than the children but not as strong as the fathers. He writes to the fathers because they have more wisdom and know Him. They are the strongest in faith. Like us children know things but do not understand because they are young and the young men understand but are working on strengthing their faith where the fathers are suppose to have the wisdom and understanding to help teach. God abides in all but i think in different levels. This is my thought :-)
